Chapter Eleven

"SHHH," NICK RAISED a finger to his lips. He shined a flashlight at the back door of Dr. Felix's clinic on the outskirts of Rascal. They'd followed the vet from the Triple Fork, keeping a safe distance behind him.

Nick had called Charboneau from the cottage and arranged for a courier to meet them in Marfa as soon as possible to pick up the blood sample and whisk it off to Austin for analysis.

"I didn't say anything," Michele protested, her pulse ticking along like a stopwatch.

"No, but you're breathing loud enough to wake the dead."

"Well, excuse me for living," Michele whispered harshly. "But I've never committed a crime before." She made a conscious effort to slow her breathing.

Nick shined the flashlight under his chin, giving him the appearance of a wicked jack-o'-lantern, and peered over his shoulder at her. "Never?"

"Well, maybe I exceeded the speed limit a few times, but that's it."

"May I remind you, Miss Holier-than-Thou, that it was your idea to retrieve the blood sample tonight."

"I take it you have committed a crime?"

"Yes. I did become familiar with the inside of a station house in the days of my misspent youth."

"Ha! I knew you were a juvenile delinquent. Bet you had a Harley and wore chains."

He gave her a dangerous look. "Better watch out for me, babe, I'm a bad boy."

Michele suppressed a shiver. She wasn't afraid of Nickerson. Was she?

"This is too easy," he said, playing the flashlight beam along the windows and doors. "Doc Felix doesn't even have an alarm system."

"The benefits of small-town living."

"You'd think if he were involved in the doping, he'd be more careful."

"Maybe he's so cocky, he's careless."

"In my old neighborhood, this place would have been stripped bare in two hours," Nick mused.

"How in the world did you end up on the right side of the law?" Michele asked.

"Long story."

"You'll have to tell me about it sometime."

"Boring stuff, Mish. Any psychologist can spout a thousand case histories just like mine."

A tug of empathy pulled at her chest. What exactly had Nickerson's childhood been like? What demons had he overcome to achieve his current role in society as defender and protector?

Nick hunkered down on his knees and opened a black shaving kit he carried under his arm. Instead of shaving cream and razors, however, the bag contained burglary tools.

Michele shook her head. "I don't believe this."

"Tools of the undercover trade. Get used to it."

"What do you mean by that?" she asked.

"You're an undercover cop now. Forget uniform. Here, hold the flashlight."

"But I don't want to leave uniform duty," she protested, leaning over to shine the light on the lock.

"You won't have a choice."

"Excuse me?"

"After my recommendation."

Michele stood perfectly still. "What recommendation?"

"That you be promoted." The lock clicked, and the door sprung open. Nick got to his feet, bowed, and swept his hand for her to enter. "Ta-da."

Nickerson was recommending her for a promotion? That must mean he thought well of her work. The notion that she'd impressed Nick had her stomach in knots. Despite their arguments, or maybe because of them, she admired him.
